Valentine’s Day comes but once a year, and for some businesses, it is one of the best times of year for business, as people buy their sweethearts and beaus something special, and singles get gifts for the objects of their affections. The holiday of love is actually the fourth biggest shopping holiday after the winter holidays – Christmas, Hannukah and others, back to school and Mother’s Day. But when do people buy presents online for V-day? Bing provides us some answers with data from searches. Searches for typical gifts like candy, flowers and jewelry, as well as searches for local romantic restaurants actually peak the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, but they slowly rise over the few weeks prior to the holiday.
In 2015, mobile searches were 32% of all Valentine’s day related searches, according to Bing, and that number should rise this year if V-day shoppers display the same trends of behavior we’ve seen in other areas. The most last minute shoppers are those who buy or send cards online to people, because searches for cards shot right up in the days before Valentine’s Day, from Feb 12-Feb 14, while searches for things that you actually need to order well in advance like gifts and jewelry seem to drop off after February 12th.
As for when people actually followed through on their searches, CTRs were highest in the days right before V-Day, from Feb 10-14, and actually seemed to peak on February 12th. There was another peak on Valentine’s Day itself, as people scrambled to make reservations at restaurants and buy last minute gifts.
