Wired Magazine has made this nifty video about the realities of Christmas. The results are not pretty, depending on who you ask. Who comes out on top? Retail establishments and those who like to eat.
First, let’s talk money. People spend an average of $830 on holiday gifts, leading to $616.9 billion dollars being injected into the market around Christmas time, or more than half of the US government’s entire budget. Plus, the average US household will spend an average of $360 this holiday season just from lighting their house up (and 3,000+ people will get injured putting those lights up)!
Perhaps it is the financial stress of the holidays that leads people to break up within the 2 weeks before Christmas. That is the period of time during the year when they are most likely to break up. However, according to Facebook, 34% more new relationships start on Christmas than on any other day of the year!
As for food woes, most people gain 1 pound during the holiday season, however, according to some researchers, they probably won’t even lose it! Those who are already overweight might gain up to 5 pounds each holiday season.
