What is the true difference between marketing and advertising? Many people, even industry experts use the terms interchangeably but they are not really the same things at all. Knowing the difference between advertising and marketing can help you target your campaigns even more by knowing everything about the industry, and it also helps marketers and advertisers communicate more effectively.
What is Marketing
Marketing is anything that involves communicating about your products and services to others. It is defined by the American Marketing Association as: “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” There are four main concepts in marketing that get communicated – the product, the price, the place and the means of promotion. Advertising is one just one of those means.
What is Advertising?
Advertising is actually a form of marketing, as noted above. Ads can be in the form of a TV commercial, an ad in a print magazine or an ad online. There can also be ads in other places like public transportation, on billboards or in malls. Advertising presents information that tries to influence and convince people to buy products, or simply give them information to help them make decisions in the future. There are so many different types of advertising that it might make your head spin, but advertising helps people to remember your brand, and could influence them when they are ready to make the decision to buy.
The reason why the line between advertising and marketing has become so blurry is that in this era of digital marketing, it seems like everything is advertising. There are social ads and organic search marketing which isn’t exactly an ad, but setting the meta description on your site, which is what shows up in google is similar to copywriting. How do you use advertising as a part of your marketing mix and how has that changed in this era of digital marketing?
