It’s hard to believe, and it sounds like an April Fool’s joke, but Twitter is actually considering lengthening the character limitations of Tweets. Twitter has reportedly started a program called “Beyond 140” which seeks to lengthen the characters in a Tweet to 10,000 in the first part of 2016. However, this wouldn’t really change how your feed looks, since you would still only see the first 140 characters, and then could click on a tweet to read more. Twitter did something similar before when it changed the number of characters allowed in a direct message from 140 to 10,000.
It’s hard to say how this would affect the social network. The character limit is part of the charm of Twitter. People must think of concise ways to say what they want (in some cases butchering language in order to squeeze things in.) Would a 10,000 character limit take away the appeal? How would it differ from Facebook if this new limit comes to pass? However, some people think that the 10,000 character limit, which is really going to look more like a “read more” feature, will be positive. Many people who have a lot to say write things down in a notepad app and screenshot it to post to Twitter when they have more than 140 characters worth to spout.
This will be a big change for social media marketers. How do you think it will affect your business?
