You’ve probably heard of the recent scandal in the Miss Universe competition. Comedian Steve Harvey, who was the host, announced the wrong winner, putting many into a state of shock. Some wonder how something like that could possibly happen, but it’s not that hard when you take a look at how the cards were created. Brian Solis, a marketing expert, had the inside scoop when he saw how the card with the winners names was so confusingly designed.
The names for runners up are on one side, and the name for the winner is in a totally inconspicuous area of the card, meaning that it wasn’t completely Steve Harvey’s fault, according to Brian. If you take a look at the image, you might actually agree.
This just goes to highlight the importance of design that not only looks good but makes sense and draws the user’s eye to where you want it to go. Trying services like eye tracking to make sure your intuition is correct would also be important. Something might make sense to you design wise, but using various methods of testing will prove that your ideas will be effective. Don’t be like the Miss Universe pageant.
