There’s been a lot of talk in the past few months about bots. Chat bots to be specific. Chat bots that are much smarter than the chatbot SmarterChild which you might remember from you AOL days. Earlier this week, Taco Bell built a bot for Slack’s chat function. Now, companies who use Slack to communicate internally can just place an order using Slack, and of course, there is a touch of Taco Bell’s signature silliness in there as well. This is great because ordering big lunches can be a big financial boon for restaurants, so making it even easier for companies to order lunch can easily help them to choose Taco Bell over other restaurants. Taco Bell is describing it as “Your own personal Taco Bell butler.”
It has pretty advanced functionality. It recognizes different forms of how people would order things, and you can even make requests about the same item on different lines. You can order a taco, and then say “extra cheese” later on in the conversation. While this bot is only on Slack for now, the developers want to make it for Facebook Messenger and Amazon’s Alexa as well.
In other bot news, earlier this week Facebook finally opened up their bot ecosystem to developers. Experts predict that soon there will be bots to help you find the news you want to read, ones to help you buy products and others to assist you with customer service, creating a whole new sphere of digital marketing that is going to develop really quickly. The bot revolution is already the quickest development of a new product from all talk to reality that we’ve seen. With customer service being the way that many similar services can distinguish themselves from each other, bots will certainly create an interesting future!
