The latest race in the tech field is definitely in the area of artificial intelligence. Google and Facebook are the two main players, and they are already proving that AI has a lot more practical applications than developing lifelike human robots like in the movie AI. The precursor to AI, a technology called deep learning, has been really successful over the past year or two, which explains how both Facebook and Google can recognize some of the people in your photos, and easily translate your speech into text, and yes, it’s how your mobile device learns to stop correcting *#%@ing to ducking.
Now Google and Facebook are in a race to take AI to the next level. However, unlike past technology races, this one isn’t happening behind closed doors with steep penalties for anyone who shares secrets. Last month, Google open sourced parts of its software that runs its deep learning engine, and now, Facebook just announced it will open source the server that runs its new AI technology. This is possibly because such a new and important technology needs really strong engineers, and maybe even ones who don’t yet work at Facebook or Google! In this case, innovation is seemingly more important than coming out on top.
Artificial Intelligence will mean big things for digital marketing. Google is already using deep learning to figure out what people are searching for on their engine, which is the most popular search engine. It is also used in products by Apple and Google for speech to text – to make it safer and easier to text when you’re driving, and of course it is behind personal assistant products like Siri. However, artificial intelligence could make it possible to predict what people want – before they have even thought about wanting it, with more accuracy than ever before.
