Remember that old lawsuit between Apple and Samsung? Apple claimed that way back when, in 2012, that Samsung basically stole the “trade dress” or look and feel of the iPhone. It’s easy to see that most smartphones have similar features, but this lawsuit was serious. The initial ruling said that Samsung would have to pay $930 million, but that amount has been lowered to $548 million, still a sizable amount.
Shockingly, in 2016, there will be a 4th jury trial between Samsung and Apple on the same subject, so that Apple can calculate possible damages from Samsung sales of 5 devices that use allegedly use Apple patents including the Galaxy S 4G and Galaxy S Showcase. The three patents include 163 tap to zoom, and 915 pinch to zoom, which are two movements that most people don’t think about twice today, but once upon a time these intuitive movements were brand new. There are more than 3,200 documents in this case, which seems to have made the judge a little peeved since she has said she won’t allow any more documents to be added to the case without permission.
This battle is seriously global with about 50 lawsuits going on worldwide about the patents mentioned here and others. Apple is coming out on top in the US but Samsung has won lawsuits in South Korea and Japan.
There are no upcoming events.
