Rakuten, an enormous affiliate network, paid for Forrester Consulting to conduct some research on the state and future of affiliate marketing. And the study has all good things to show for the future. First of all, the study shows that currently, 80% of advertisers and 84% of publishers use at least some affiliate marketing as part of their mix. 90% of respondents also said that even if they weren’t using affiliate marketing, they consider it important. 20% of all revenue from the businesses surveyed comes from affiliate marketing, showing the power that affiliate marketing can have for businesses.
The most exciting part of the survey is that they predict that by 2021, affiliate marketing will be generating $7 billion from both direct and indirect sales. Adam Weiss, the GM of the Rakuten Affiliate Network explained why people are starting to come around more to affiliate advertising. “Affiliate marketing is a high-value, low-risk strategy proven to drive sales and awareness for brands and revenue for publishers and when done right, it cultivates mutually beneficial and authentic relationships between brands and publishers, and those publishers and their audience.” He says.
The survey showed that more companies are embracing affiliate marketing as part of their overall mix of strategies that can help to create multiple revenue streams and bring in more dollars than ever. Instead of creating sites specifically for products, publishers are starting to pick and choose things from existing affiliate networks that work for their readers, growing the realm of affiliate marketing in new and exciting ways.
