Musical legend Prince passed away earlier this week and in his wake he left many astonished fans who mourn his loss. He was an amazing musician, had great showmanship and was apparently an important part of the Minnesota community where he built his Paisley Palace. He put out 32 albums in his 57 years, and was known for his wacky fashion style, unique voice and essentially virtuoso musical talents. Everyone knows Prince, and many grew up listening to his music. A lot of people claim that he was an icon for those who felt like they were a little bit different, which is quite strangely, the majority of people. Many could identify with his songs which were often about real life problems like domestic violence, love and sex. Prince was also a major supporter of female musicians, and he almost always had a girl shredding on guitar in his band. It isn’t a surprise that the social media wake left in his absence is a huge one, but it surpasses many, which surprised a lot of media analysts.
On Twitter alone Prince has garnered over 12 million mentions since his death and it seems like everyone is posting about his passing, young and old. David Bowie’s recent passing in January did not garner as much clout, according to some analysts. It seems like everyone loved Prince so much that they can’t stop talking about him. Many feel that he was a continuous presence in the music world, putting out hits even as he got older. Some speculate that people are so vocal about missing him because his death was very sudden and unexpected, whereas Bowie’s was basically expected after a long battle with illness. Either way, both are great musicians who have helped to shape pop culture today, and if we’re using Twitter as any gauge, will be missed greatly.
