It’s possible that the NSA could have helped Hillary’s communications be even more secure in 2009, when she requested a similar specially secured Blackberry device that would be harder for people to spy on, like the one the president uses. However, her request was denied. Clinton has already been criticized because of the private e-mail server that she used for official state correspondence. Some conservative pundits have said that this unsecure Blackberry paired with her alleged lack of a seemingly secure e-mail account could have led to e-mails being leaked, however, tech experts assure the American public that what the NSA does to the devices is actually prevent the microphone from being hacked to be used a spying device, and the mods that the NSA makes to it has nothing to do with the e-mail. That’s right – even the president’s Blackberry is pretty much just a regular one!
The only way that this device could have been used in an insecure way is if Clinton had brought it into a meeting where some things were said that no one else is supposed to know. While people might assume that she may have brought her Blackberry everywhere with her, there is no evidence that she actually did bring this device with her into any meetings, or that it was ever hijacked and used as a spy device. It’s not clear exactly why the NSA denied her request, as the Secretary of State seems as deserving as anyone of a secured smart device.
Hopefully these tech issues don’t overtake the ongoing election, and the candidates can just talk about the issues, instead of having to focus on the minutia of which e-mail did this and which device did that. These are important issues too, but they can be easily polarized by either side!
