Colorado developer Kevin Owocki recently created a new tool that might revolutionize the way ads are seen by consumers and web readers. He woke up at 4am one day with the idea that people could just offer to pay some bitcoins to make ads on websites disappear, and decided to make it. The new tool is called Adblock to Bitcoin, if you want to check it out. It hasn’t been widely implemented just yet, but there is a small buzz, especially in hacker communities, about this new tool.
But why limit it to bitcoins? Bitcoin is not a widely used currency, and is mostly only used by those who are technologically savvy. Consumers might want to pay to get rid of ads with any form of payment available online such as with Paypal, credit cards or even gift cards. Luckily Owocki says that Adblock to Bitcoin can work with other payment methods.
What does this mean for you, digital advertiser? Keep your eyes peeled and find out if it is worth it to advertise on sites that offer options for consumers to opt out of ads. If you have your own digital publication, it could be another revenue stream that is quite viable, especially if you have a loyal following.
