Security data breaches have become regular news items over the past few years, and these frequent security problems may be prompting the FTC to come up with new data compliance rules to make it harder for hackers and those with an axe to grind to get access to sensitive data. Hacks have become so rampant that they have even happened to government agencies such as the IRS. For every larger hack that you read about in the news, there are probably a bunch of smaller companies that aren’t large enough to be newsworthy which also get hacked.
The FTC sometimes takes legal action against companies that have been hacked for not protecting customer data, leading to identity theft. The FTC tends to hold customers responsible because they post privacy policies to attract customers to their sites and services, but then don’t provide the services they claim to provide.
Many analysts predict that in the coming year the FTC will implement some new regulations about the storage and keeping of data to prevent even more hacks from affecting consumers in the coming years. These new regulations will be important for marketers to be aware of, as they also tend to store large amounts of consumer data which will need to be protected. How good is your current security planning and data storage?
