Facebook has a new feature on their mobile newsfeed that could increase how much users love to look at the social network (even though they already enjoy looking at it a lot!) Basically, they have been testing interest based newsfeeds since October and are now ready to move the tests over to mobile. How it would work is that you would essentially have a regular newsfeed with tabs for different sections and interests.
The new feeds pull posts from pages, your friends, people you follow and notable publications. So far no ads appear in these new feeds, however, experts predict that if the feature gets rolled out to a larger number of users, that will change and the feeds will become rich fodder for advertisements.
Experts on Facebook predict that the social network is doing this to get users a more personal experience and get the to spend more time on the site and more time in the app – as if that was possible, with the average US consumer spending 40 minutes per day on Facebook! Of course more possibilities for advertisement would be a major motivation as well.
Facebook’s previous app Paper app, which was something akin to a newspaper with different sections could be considered the precursor to this new FB feature. So in the future, Facebook advertising could become even more targeted!
