Wifi is becoming as ubiquitous as the air we breath, and most people are pretty satisfied with wifi. However, there is a new type of internet connection that creates so many possibilities because it is 100x faster than the fastest wifi. It’s called LiFi and it transmits data at super high speeds using something called visible light communication or VLC. Scientists in a lab have gotten up to 224 Gigabits per second. That’s fast. In the US, the average internet speed is 11.5 megabits per second, or .0115 gigabits per second. So you can see, LiFi would be a vast improvement. Data transmission could be as fast a 1 gigabyte per second. Just for reference, at this point, about an hour of streaming Netflix is 1 gigabyte of data.
LiFi was only invented back in 2011, so it is still an incredibly new technology. It uses flickering LED lights that go so fast you can’t even see it, so don’t worry about it being annoying. The main benefit to LiFi is that light can’t go through walls and doors, so it is pretty secure. Due to this, however, it’s unlikely that LiFi can ever completely replace WiFi, but analysts believe the two technologies could be used together to create faster, and more safe and secure networks and internet connections.
All that would need to happen to make LiFi widespread would be to fit lightbulbs with a microchip, making the technology easy to spread around the globe once it it ready to go.
