The X-Files is coming back and everyone is talking about it. There are also some great branded tie-ins for the cult classic’s comeback. Anyone who is a fan will love this new interactive map developed by Katy Decorah of Mapbox. She used a tool made by Jane Roberts entitled “Mapping the X-Files,” which provides a Google Map superimposed with every single location that Mulder and Scully visited in their 7 seasons together, traveling the globe trying to fight crime, figure out alien mysteries and find “the truth.” This project is good and interesting, but the map doesn’t show you the names of places, and it is not very interactive as you aren’t able to search for anything.
Katy took this information and made a cool interactive tool which allows you to see each episode and the name of the place. When you click on the episode or place, the map automatically zooms in and shows you a description of the episode in question. The map instead of being the regular Google Maps colors is all black with green and red dots – so much more mysterious and X-Files looking. This new tool also makes it easier to see episodes which had multiple locations. It makes it a bit easier to see if an episode of the X-Files happened near where you live, and it’s also a great example of someone creatively re imagining something that already exists.
This is just a fun little tool that shows you what is possible when you think outside the box about something you’re passionate about. The truth is out there…
