So you have a great idea for a new product or service. Great! But it doesn’t mean anything unless it is filling a niche or an empty hole that exists right now in the market. It kind of seems like people really have everything they need right now, but new companies are springing up all the time with things that people didn’t even know that they needed. Amazon Prime is a great example of that. They have made it so that a group of people feel that it is easier to shop online than go to an actual store. Uber and Lyft are also great examples. Who knew that you needed the ability to order a cab from your phone, but you did! Now those are two services many people would say they can’t live without.
However, Uber is having a bit of trouble in cities with huge amounts of traffic. Taking a cab or car service is supposed to be more convenient and most notably, more fast, than taking public transportation. Manila in the Philippines is a city that potentially has the worst traffic of anywhere in the world. For an Uber cab here, it can take up to an hour and a half just to reach a passenger who is not too far away. And just going a few miles can take a ridiculously long time, since there are about 200 cars for every mile of road. The other problem with Uber there is that only 31% of Filipino people have bank accounts. Another similar service called GrabTaxi that is also popular in the Philippines is testing cash payments.
Despite all of the difficulties, Uber is actually becoming quite popular in the area, because it really is one of the best transportation alternatives, as there are not many public transit options. So while it might not seem like it fills a niche in Manilla, it actually does!
