Some new unconfirmed reports point to the possibility that Microsoft is preparing to buy the mobile ad network called InMobi. If this is true, then Microsoft might be positioning itself to compete with Google and Facebook, which are comprehensive companies that also offer tons in the way of online and mobile marketing. Microsoft has been trying to play catch up to these other mega companies for a while. Their search engine Bing, has just a fraction of the traffic of Google and the Windows Phone, set to compete with Android and iOS devices also lags far behind the other two major brands.
InMobi is a mobile ad network based out of India that has more than 1 billion users per month. The company has been in rumored acquisition talks with Google and Yahoo in the past, but nothing ever resulted. Microsoft is actually already InMobi’s largest client, so the two companies probably know each other fairly well already, making it a deal that seems to make sense. Analysts believe that the buyout price would have to be around $2 billion, which sounds like a huge amount, but is really not that much for a mega company like Microsoft. The acquisition hasn’t been announced officially yet, but some believe that an official announcement will be made soon.
