While link building is not as important as it used to be, it is still something that can be helpful for SEO, especially for local businesses. However, according to Search Engine Land, there are some ways that local businesses can improve their search engine standings using specific link building techniques.
One idea that they offer is to give alumni or current students from a local university, and members of the military, discounts. You can place this information somewhere on your site, which will make it easy for local alumni groups or military organizations to link back to you. Similarly, another idea is to sponsor a group on Meetup.com, so that they will place a link back to you on their group page. You can also sponsor a Little League or other local kids’ sports team, which will not only gain you favor in the community but can also get you links through social media and any team sites.
Taking advantage of the local nature of your business is a great idea. Research your area and find out if there are any business awards you can get nominated for. Even if you don’t win, you will still get links back to your site from the competition website. You can also incorporate your community into your content strategy and build links at the same time. Offer to do an interview with a city council member or local “celebrity” and post it on your blog. The interviewee should be more than happy to promote the interview on their social media accounts and their own website if they have one. Similarly, there is probably someone who is already blogging about your area, look them up and see if they can write about your business.
There are probably also local directories for your area online. Spending a bit of time doing some web research to find them and get yourself listed can be beneficial for you.
