Google has long been silent and very secretive about the website qualities that lead to good search engine standings, leading those working in the field of search engine optimization to speculate and wonder. Many companies think they have a pretty good idea of what Google is looking for, and have created their own guides as to what is important when it comes to SEO. Of course these industry experts can make their best educated guesses based on tests and results, but no one has ever known for sure. Now, one Google executive, Andrey Lippatsev, a Search Quality Senior Strategist essentially revealed the top three things that Google’s algorithms look for in a website.
People already knew that the number three quality was something called Rankbrain, a machine learning algorithm that helps to process search results and figures out if the result is relevant to the original search based on a variety of statistics. However, at the time that Google revealed Rankbrain as the number three thing their algorithm uses, they refused to reveal numbers one and two, and kept everyone guessing. However, Andrey revealed in a Google Q&A that the numbers one and two qualities are links and content, confirming the suspicions of many SEOs out there. However, ever the secretive tease, Mr. Lippatsey did not say which one was more important.
Even though many people have already suspected that “content is king” and links are also important, it is nice for industry professionals to have a confirmation that these two things are literally the most important factors in an SEO strategy. Will learning this change your SEO strategies in any way?
