It was recently the 41st anniversary of the discovery of the “missing link” Lucy. She is a female skeleton of an Australopithecus, a hominid that lived in Africa about 3.2 million years ago, that was discovered in 1974 and named after one of the top songs of the decade – Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds. A plaster cast of the skeleton, which walked upright and only stood about 3 feet 7 inches tall, can be seen near where it was discovered in Ethiopia.
Google had one of their well known doodles to commemorate the anniversary, which brings evolution to the forefront of digital culture. It’s no secret that many forward thinking tech people believe in the theory of evolution, so to have a tech giant like Google visibly support the anniversary and the theory of evolution, is a big thumbs up to evolution. It is one that could anger creationists and the more religious, less scientific set. However, it’s apparent that Google doesn’t care, they just want to keep coming up with creative doodles that commemorate events that are important to the culture of technology and forward thinking folks.
