Boodigo is a search engine, but it’s not ‘just another’ search engine according to its founder and CEO, Mr. Colin Rowntree. Rather than relying on the promises of monolithic tech companies like Google and Facebook to take the available precautions to protect the privacy of the consumer public, Mr. Rowntree and a team of former Googlers took matters into their own hands to create a new search engine from the ground up – one that won’t allow them to pass along data to the NSA or anyone else, even under a court order, because there simply is no data to pass…
“Building a search engine is not as easy as it seems” said Colin Rowntree, CEO of Boodigo.com “Lots of sites have a search functionality, so why is it so hard? Most of these sites have a finite amount of data. This makes searching that data easy. When we talk about Boodigo we are crawling and searching an endless amount of data. And then we are able to present it to the user quickly when they search. Given that, it still might sound trivial to the non-programmer but think of the only people that have built successful search engines (Google and Microsoft) both of them have a lot of money, resources and developers that they are able to throw at it.”
With larger companies, their goal of having a search engine is only to make a profile on individual users and their habits. Our goal was the opposite of this. Where the major search engines are continually filtering search results to be family friendly, we decided to focus only on the adult wants in a search engine and still make something clean, fast and give the results that the user is actually looking for. In doing this we made a very focused and conscious effort to not track users.
“We do keep data” Rowntree clarified. “We keep the search term and the country that searched for it. But that is it. Nothing identifiable about each individual user’s habits or searches and nothing to track it back to them. All of the web server logs are thrown away once processed. In addition we added a secure search option so that the query string gets encrypted so even if there is some logging on the local network of what urls you are going to or a key logger, nobody can see what you are searching for. Each secure key is only good for one hour so after that hour it no longer works.”
This kind of anonymity and security is very important in this day and age, particularly because everything is being logged and harvested for all sorts of unspoken purposes by commercial and governmental interests. A talented data scientist can take typical search data from you and formulate a profile of what makes you you. “Even if you don’t want them to know – they can find out everything about you pretty easily” explained Rowntree “Which is why Boodigo is as much a passion as it is a commercial product for myself and the talented team working to reach its full potential.”
