Instagram has recently added a new feature that could give it an edge over other similar social media services like Vine or Snapchat. They recently added the ability for users to take 60 second videos that can get shared with their followers. This is much longer than Vine’s 6 second videos or Snapchat’s 10 second videos. They first started to allow longer videos for advertisers, but have now rolled out this feature for all users. Previously, Instagram videos could only be 15 seconds long, which was still longer than those other services, but apparently, not quite enough!
The reason they added more seconds on was because people seem to love watching videos on Instagram. “In the last six months, the time people spent watching video increased by more than 40 percent,” the company said about their decision. They also cited that they want to make video creation and sharing even more “fun” and “flexible” for their users. The company insinuated that there would be more big changes coming this year as they said “This is one step of many you’ll see this year.”
To make it easier for Instagram stars and newbies alike to post longer videos, they are implementing a feature that will allow users to essentially edit multiple clips together from their camera rolls. However, this editing feature will only be available on iOS to start. For those who are ready and raring to go with 60 second videos, you may have to wait a while. While the feature does start its roll out today, it will be on a continuous roll out to all Instagram users for the next few months. The new editing feature will be available for iOS users soon.
