Apple has been one of the major technologies that has, for some reason, skipped out on the memo that businesses should be on social media. They don’t have an official Facebook page, though their unofficial page has more than 9 million likes on the social media site. They don’t have Instagram, though there are many posing as the company on the site, and they aren’t present on any of the other networks. Perhaps the reason is that Apple is so well known that they just don’t need the promotion of being on social media. However, they have just decided to change all of that and gotten a Twitter account.
The account on Twitter is called @applesupport and it is supposed to provide followers with “tips, tricks and helpful information” for their Apple devices. Most marketing experts believe that Apple is doing this not for promotion, but because they are looking for more avenues for customer support. Both Facebook and Twitter have recently made changes to their business programs that allow for easier customer support, as more and more people turn to social media to look for companies to provide information and customer service.
Even though they don’t have any official social media accounts for the overall brand, Apple isn’t completely ignorant when it comes to social media. They have accounts for their iTunes and Apple Music products, and they also have bought ads, promoted trends, and other paid advertising on social media sites, especially at times of product launches. Marketing experts note that Apple used to have a Tumblr account but has deleted in recent years, though they have kept one going for both iTunes and Apple Music. No one knows exactly why they seem to be so shy about social media, but everyone is glad to see them on social, no matter the reason, as they gained 25,000 followers in the very first two hours they were on the social media site.
