If you’re an app developer or marketer, this news will be essential for you. Some industry insiders are saying that Apple is developing a paid search ad style system for the App store. Bloomberg first reported on the story, saying that they have “constructed a secret team to explore changes to the App Store, including a new strategy for charging developers to have their apps more prominently displayed.” This could be a big moneymaking idea for Apple, since there are more than 1.5 million apps in the app store, and currently they have no way of being ranked in the app store, other than Apple’s algorithm for relevancy.
Based on the reports, no one knows whether Apple wants to create a better experience for users or generate more income, though the result would probably be a combination of both. However, it’s not like Apple needs to generate any more income from the App store as last year they made about $20 billion in revenue from the endeavor.
So far, the only places for people to advertise their apps has been outside of the app store. Facebook has seen a lot of success with ads for app downloads. The apps have an “install now” button which will take users straight to the app store to download the advertised app. They also have ads for desktop ads which will allow users to download Facebook apps right onto their computer to use. This could also be a big help to app developers who are trying to think of new ways to get noticed, especially those apps for which there are many similar ones that don’t distinguish themselves well from each other, for example, Fax apps. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
