Anonymous is hacktivist collective that you do not want to cross. They have allegedly doxxed KKK members, meaning given out their personal information found during hacks, as well as allegedly doxxing members of law enforcement who were investigating hacking. Now Anonymous has turned their gaze to more global issues. They have taken credit for some attacks on ISIS which occurred after the terrorist attacks in Paris. According to one article, Anonymous feels this was can’t be fought with guns, but must stop the propaganda used to recruit at the source – the internet. “Stopping their propaganda is an effective way to weaken their manpower and their presence in the Internet.” a representative from Anonymous told the BBC.
However, Anonymous is also taking credit for an attack against Turkey, a country that some see as responsible, even if it is indirect, for ISIS. Many believe the country allows activities that fund ISIS to happen within its borders. The country has seen attacks that disrupted banks and government websites. 400,000 sites allegedly went down in Turkey, forcing the country to block traffic to stop the attacks.
Before Anonymous took credit for the attacks, many speculated that they were actually from Russia, in retaliation for a passenger jet that was shot down by Turkey earlier in 2015.
